Having Windows Live Messenger in the notification area

SkyHi @ Friday, January 01, 2010
When using Windows 7, Windows Live Messenger does not fits in the system tray when you close the window as it is the case with Vista or XP.

The solution is to run WLM in compatibility mode for Windows Vista ".

To do this:
Start/Computer/Open your system partition (C:)

Default path: C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr

Please right click on the file msnmgr/Properties

Next, open the Compatibility tab.

Click on Run this program in compatibility mode for:/Windows Vista (Service Pack 2 for example).

Confirm by clicking OK.

Open WLM, it will be found in the notification area.

Change the icon of a folder or shortcut

If you want to change the icon of a folder on your desktop then:
  • Start by right-clicking the New Folder.
  • Next, go to Properties then Customize.

Then go to Change Icon ... where you can change the folder icon with one of many proposed.

Click Apply to see if the new icon fits to your needs, if that is the case click OK.
